How to Get Your Site Ranked On Google

How to get ranked on GoogleHow do you get your blog listed on Google?

It’s very simple… just tell Google about your new blog!

To do this go to: http://google.com/webmasters/ and enter the URL of your website.

Make sure you add both the http://yourdomain.com and the http://www.yourdomain.com sites to your webmasters area.

You’ll need to verify the ownership of your site by uploading a small html file. You can upload it through the cPanel. Within 24 hours the Google bot will visit your site and get it indexed.

Before you do this though you want to make sure you have a few things ready.

Firstly, you want to make sure that the Google XML Sitemaps plugin is installed and activated on your blog. This will let Google know about all of the content on your site.

Next we want to make sure we have a Robots.txt file. This file lets Google know about the pages that we DON’T want to have indexed. Why is this important? The reason for this is duplicate content. Whenever you write a blog post it will show up in numerous places in your blog such as your categories page, archives and trackbacks.

The Robots.txt file can easily be modified with the WP Robots Txt plugin. You can find this, along with the Google XML Sitemaps plugin by searching for them in the plugins section of your WordPress dashboard.

Now, to edit the Robots.txt file, click on “Settings” then on “Reading”. Scroll down a little bit until you find the Robots.txt file. Here are a few locations that you may want to Disallow.

Disallow: /wp-admin/

Disallow: /wp-includes/

Disallow: /cgi-bin/

Disallow: /wp-includes/

Disallow: /category/

Disallow: /archives/

Disallow: /trackback/

Disallow: /feed/

Changing The Way Google Displays Information On The Search Engine Results Page

Yes, it is possible to change the way Google displays your blog on the search results page!

Ordinarily when displaying one of your posts in the search results Google would take your Title as the title and use the first 160 characters as the description. This has led some people to keyword stuff their titles and first paragraph of their posts. It’s not a very people friendly way to do it and can lead to some awful writing.

A better way to do it is to use the All In One SEO Plugin. With this plugin we can change the title and description that is shown for the Google search results.  When creating a post scroll down to the bottom and you can edit the Title and Description that Google will display in the search results.

By controlling what Google displays in the description area we can create a more compelling ad for searches while still letting our post read easily.

Keyword Research

Keyword research is finding out what people are searching for. How is this done? By using any number of free and paid keyword tools. Here’s a few that I like to use.

SEOBook Keyword Tool

WordTracker

SEMRUSH

Keyword Spy

HitTail

Most of these services have a free version or trial period so you can check it out or even get some free keywords without having to pay for anything. Not only will they give you the search phrases but they’ll show you how many people are searching for those phrases and what the competition is like.

You want to look for low competition phrases that have a high search volume. Look for keywords with a search volume of around 2,000 to 10,000 searches per month and do posts around those phrases.

Let’s do a quick recap on how to get listed on Google so you can get free targeted traffic to your blog.

  • Do keyword research to find out what people are searching for
  • Write your blog post or ask someone to write it for you
  • Let the Google XML Sitemaps plugin ping Google to index your new blog post

As you can see it’s a pretty simple process but does take some work. You’ll have to be consistent with this process if you really want to turn your blogging into a full time income.
