How to Create Content that Generates Traffic

When there’s millions of blog posts published every day how do you make your content stand out from the crowd. I’m going to give you a few ideas to build content that actually generates traffic and hopefully makes you money in the long run.

Let me first say that building an online business is not something that generally happens overnight. Time and again I see people start up new websites only to abandon them a few months later. Ideally you should set aside 6 to 9 months to establish your site and build traffic in your niche.

Currently one of my blogs is generating over 1,500 page views per day. It’s taken a fair amount of work but it’s still a relatively small site.

Content to Generate Traffic Pageviews

I’m going to emulate this process with another two sites and by the end of the year have three good quality sites that are earning me money.

So to get back to building the right content it’s not just about finding the right
keywords, although this does play a part, but emulating successful websites. The first step is to find blog posts and articles that are already performing well, add your own experience to them and then promote them to people who are interested.

Finding the Right Content

Flippa is a good place to see what is working for others. There are a lot of scammers on Flippa so I’d be cautious buying a website but you can mine their website database for top performing sites. Flippa have a good search function so you can select your niche and then drill down to eliminate non-performing websites.

Head over to Flippa.com and choose ‘Established Websites’. Select your keyword such as ‘marketing’, ‘technology’ or ‘fitness’ and select the minimum number of monthly hits to the website. In this case I chose 5,000.

Flippa Search Results

If you get some results yo can have a look at the websites and see what they’re doing to generate that traffic. Have a look at the kinds of content they’re producing, how often and article topics that seem to be popular. This is a good starting place for designing your own content strategy.

Reddit Hot & Top Posts

Reddit can be a good idea to see what’s popular in a niche. When you search for a topic, such as ‘fitness’ Reddit will display the hot topics in that niche. have a look and see if there are any posts that you can write about on your website. If there’s nothing there switch over to ‘Top’ to find the all time top posts for that niche. So you can either go for ‘Hot’ to see recently trending topics and ‘Top’ for the most popular topics.

Reddit Top Topics

As you can see in the example above there’s at least a few good blog post ideas such as ‘How to Workout Around your Children’,  ‘Best Equipment for a full Workout at Home’ and ‘Do I Honestly need Supplements’.

Pinterest

While Pinterest isn’t great for all niches for certain niches it does do very well, can drive traffic all by itself and give you a good idea of what is popular. A quick search on Pinterest for ‘Yoga’ has already provide a number of popular blog post ideas. Some of these have over a quarter of a million pins!

Keeping in Touch

If you’re in a particular niche and you want to build traffic make sure you’re keeping in touch with blogs and other websites that are successful in that niche. Keep an eye on what they’re up to so you can keep a check on the competition and hopefully do a better job.

That’s not to say that you always want to emulate others but it does give you a good starting point and a reference for how the niche is going.
